Mayo Clinic on Digestive Health: What to do for heartburn, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and other common conditions, 3rd edition
Stephen Crane Hauser, M.D.
If you’re curious about the “why” of digestive problems and you don’t have a degree in biological sciences, this is a good basic education in one volume…if you can find it. Solid information and plenty of illustrations cover the topic in satisfying breadth. I found the depth slightly shallow, but my first degree was in microbiology and I’ve been researching gut issues for the last several years—so I speak “gut geek” pretty well.
MConDH opens with a general section on common-sense health practices, then symptoms of and suggested tests for a variety of intestinal issues. The second section covers those issues in greater depth: GERD, ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, diverticular disease, gallstones, pancreatitis, liver disease, and cancer.
